Too soon to book car for Oct.? Get at airport or hotel?

Should I be looking into a rental car now for a trip at the end of October? We'll need a car for only 3-4 days. Is it better/more economical to pick it up at the airport or maybe get it the next day at the hotel?

Thanks...

We normally get the car from the hotel. You don't pay the ridiculously high airport tax - it adds up pretty quick. Also, we prefer to get away from the airport as quick as possible and grabbing a cab works well for us. We've picked up a car at the airport before but ended up not using it the first day, so it kind of balances out for price.

Have a great trip, we will be there at the same time - 1 month 28 days!!

It is not too soon. It may actually be too late for some rental companies. I prefer renting a car at the airport. There is a 12% airport tax, but it is worth it, IMO. For the past three years, we have used Econo at their airport location. Even with the additional tax, they are competitive. Fill out the application on line. They will not charge your credit card before arrival. Check with your credit card company if you're covered for CDW

insurance. You probably are, so you would be able to waive the rental company's $10/day charge The airport tax is 12% and amounts to less than $20. If you have a car delivered and picked up, you are expected to tip the driver. How much is at your discretion. Check the TOTAL cost for each method. I believe you will be satisfied that Econo, with the tax is right there or better.

" The airport tax is 12% and amounts to less than $20."

That is the total amount for a one week rental - economy car.

Reserve in advance.

One year in low season we did not reserve a car in advance. Luckily we only wanted a car for one day and not the whole week. In calling around for a rental we were not able to rent the car on the day that we had wished. Fortunately our plans were flexible.

Most car rental companies will pick you up at your resort and take you back to their office to fill out the paperwork for the rental.

It is definitely not too soon to reserve a vehicle. Our reservation is already made for June.

We will be renting right from the airport in Oct and already have our reservations. If you don't you will still have to pay a taxi and tip. We have rented from Budget which is right outside of the airport.

I appreciate Tony's opinion, but we do the same as Randy.

There are agencies who don't want to rent for less than a week. We have rented from Tropic and wheels2go and would recommend either. The cars weredropped off and picked up at our hotel, and wheels2go included the use of a cell phone.

I am with Lori and Randy, get it the next day at the hotel. That's what we always do, get out of the airport ASAP settle into our first day and worry about the car on day 2.

Whether you rent on arrival or have a car delivered is a matter of personal choice. Many do it one way and many choose the other. It all comes down to what works for you. It will certainly cost more to have a car delivered and then picked up. You will not get the benefit of a full week rental rate and you will pay close to a day's rental cost for taxi + tip each way. Not a huge figure, for sure. So, go with your gut.

You won't pay any extra for resort drop off and return of a rental car. It is most likely a wash in the cost of paying the airport tax vs taking a taxi to and from your resort (depending on the price of car you get). Contact some rental places and see what they offer and get your own pricing.
