Are there things to do around cruise port?

We will be cruising with Princess in March and are not really interested in the excursions offered. Is the cruise port withing walking distance of anything thing we could do for the 5 hours we are in port?

They have shops and restur. within walkin distance. A very nice mall and a flea market. Also their are 2 Casinos. But the beaches in Aruba are to die for you could hop on a bus or take a cab to the beach have lunch and shop before you go back on the ship, IMO they really dont have any bargains, maybe at the flea market, but that is the usual t-shirts, etc. If you really want to get the feel of Aruba you must go to the beach. Cabs are fairly cheep and the buses are very easy. This is one of the few Islands that you can get around very easy and feel safe with no hassels.

I don't you'd get a good idea of Aruba if you just walk around downtown. I would recommend a cab ride to the Palm Beach area. For a destination to give the driver perhaps Moomba Beach Bar. You can rent beach chairs there and walk the beach. There are a few bars that serve lunch right out by the water. This would give you a nkce stop in Aruba and easy to do.

I know you are not interested in excursions, however you may want to consider a helicopter tour of the island, they offer 15 mins or 30 mins tours. This is located in the general area you will be at. A lot of fun and does not take up a lot of your time you will still have lots of time to look around and have fun.

We cruised with Princess in December 2011 and rented a car from Smart Rent A Car ($55US all taxes included for a large SUV) from the rental booth at the ship's dock and explored the island on our own for about 4 or 5 hours. It cost less than $15 gas to do so. $70 was a bargain for the four of us and we explored at our speed and according to our interests.

We had plenty of time to explore most of the island, see the beaches, swim at Baby beach, eat a leisurely lunch, see the lighthouse, the National park, the gold mine and natural bridge and get 'lost' in this wonderful island. We had time leftover to do a quick look-see of shops by the dock before going back onboard at 4pm.

Happy exploring!
