Final Chapter - Thanks for choosin

As a satisfactory conclusion to my original September 22nd posting “Thanks for choosin”, the following e-mail was received by me today, and, the mystery of the “request for not so funny money” has now been resolved.

From: Shauna Shuttle Anguilla

To: Zabar

Date: October 05, 2009

We sincerely apologize for you receiving that email, however, approximately 2 weeks ago we have been experiencing terrible email problems and someone got a hold of our password somehow. After changing our password we saw that several emails were sent regarding the same you received.

Again, we do apologize and thank you for caring.

Best regards,

Captain Jason Lloyd

This morning the "Today Show" devoted a segment to this exact scam. It appears the criminals have been sending out emails that, when opened, have a virus that infects the computer allowing access to an individuals email adresses. It also allows the criminal to see and capture passwords when typed. Then, as with Zabar1, the individual's friends, etc are contacted with a sob story and a request for money. According to the segment, this is happening on Face Book as well.

According to Google and Microsoft, the scammers isolated approximately 10,000 "Hotmail" subscriber accounts such as the "Shauna VI Ferry". The scammers then e-mailed the "plea letter" to certain customers that were included in their e-mail address books; including yours truly. Zabar

How do they go about finding the perpetrators? It would be interesting to see how many people actually fell for the scam and how much money they derived from it.

Pepper, many of these scammers are members of organized criminal organizations in China and Russia, and God knows where else. Many of them are just very knowledgeable, teenaged computer "geeks". The FBI and Interpol both have special units devoted to tracking them down for prosecution, but, with little success. Zabar

It appears people are falling for this particular scam because the emails appear to come from persons that they know and include the person's email address. The person mentioned in the TODAY segment had sent (and lost) $3000 to aide a dear friend she thought was injured in London.
