Camden or Boothbay Harbor to round out our trip?

Which one-night stay would best complement the rest of our family trip to Maine, with teenagers?

We're stopping for a day in Newburyport, MA on our way up to Mt. Desert Island, then spending 6 days in Acadia/Bar Harbor. We'd like to spend 1 day in either Camden or Boothbay Harbor, then 1 day in Portland, before returning back to NY.

Any thoughts on whether Camden or Boothbay would fit better in our itinerary?

Thanks!

No the story wasn't limited. But votes were taken from the readership.

I loved the first two sentences of the Downeast Magazine article: "No doubt you've had plenty of time (stuck in Route 1 traffic) to admire Wiscasset's sign declaring it 'The Prettiest Village in Maine.' Such a grand claim bears occasional examination." Evidently they had "more than a thousand" of their readers who voted.

Back to your question in Post # 7 above....

Comparitive driving times:

Bar Harbor to Camden about an hour and three quarters Bar Harbor to Boothbay Harbor about two and three quarter hours

Camden to Portland about an hour and three quarters. Boothbay Harbor to Portland about an hour and a quarter

Only real difference in scenery will be the part of the Boothbay Harbor route from US Rt 1 down Rt 27 to Boothbay Harbor (it's at the end of a peninsula, compared to Camden which is directly on Rt 1), and the ride back up the same peninsula on the same route the next morning on your way to Portland... Other than that, the most logical route from Bar Harbor to either Camden or Boothbay Harbor and on to Portland will be exactly the same.. along US Rt 1. If it helps, it should also be noted that the ride down Rt 27 from Rt 1 to get to Boothbay runs essentially down the middle of the peninsula, so very little coastal scenery until you actually get to Boothbay Harbor itself..... but then there's plenty...

As far as the Downeast poll is concerned, I'd offer just two thoughts: 1) beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and 2) polls are won, not necessarily by those who deserve to win, but by those who can best organize their supporters.... Don't necessarily disagree with some of the results, but definitely have personal tastes that might put them in a different order....

Tough to pick between the two. Weather would be a huge factor. What time of year are you traveling here? As Bonnie stated above, Mt. Battie at Camden Hills State Park is a must in Camden. You have to drive right past it on route 1 when you head back from Bar Harbor. You can hike up or drive to the top, either way, it's well worth it. Great place to bring a lunch, sit at the top and take in the views.

Camden has several 2-hour schooner trips leaving from the dock, and those are a lot of fun. Hanging out downtown might bore teens, a smaller version of Bar Harbor shops, though some are very nice. Kayak tours are also offered off the dock by Maine Sport Outfitters. Laite Beach on Bayview Street is a very small sandy beach with amazing views looking back at Camden, Mt Battie and Mt. Megunticook.

Boothbay Harobr also has the typical shops, but there you can go on a whale watch if you haven't done so already, check out the nearby Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens - it's not what you think. That place is a amazing for all ages. They have a great website you could look at to see if it would be of interest.

All depends on what you are looking for. Both towns are great places.
