Coastal Drive from Tillamook

We are staying in Portland and would like to spend a day doing a scenic coastal drive. If we had out to Tillamook, is it more scenic to go north to Seaside or south to Lincoln City?

Thanks.

101 is more scenic from Seaside to Tillamook. Are you just trying to get to Tillamook?

If this is an option, stay on hwy 26 west of Portland all the way to hwy 101, then go south to Tillamook and return hwy 6. You'll be thankful you did!

Tillamook doesn't matter that much, it just looked ike the best way to get to the coast. Basically just looking for the best drive from Portland that can be done in a day.

The loop we usually do is what dengay mentioned. Hwy 26/101/6. It is an easy day trip and a nice scenic ride.

Thanks. I read on another post that it's safer to drive from North to South on the coast. Why is that?

The main reason some posters suggest that is because you aren't "crossing" traffic to pull out to the viewpoints. However, many of the day use state parks have a turn lane, and except in the busier areas (and/or in high summer) , there really isn't that much traffic along 101.

There are lots of people who live right on Hwy 101, and lots of businesses, and there are people turning right and left across traffic all the time along the entire coast.

It is true that going south, the passenger gets the best views and can even snap pics out the window as you drive along :-)

Makes sense. Thanks. Since I'll be the passenger, my vote will be to go North to South. :)

We love the drive from Seaside to Tillamook. Once you get there, don't miss Cape Lookout State Park. The Cheese Factory is also fun to visit. Enjoy your trip! :)
