Springdale to North Rim

We are aiming to visit Zion and Bryce on a tour of Utah and intend to base ourselves in Springdale.

Is it feasible to do a day trip from Springdale to the GCNR or do we need to overnight somewhere closer (Kanab/Fredonia/Jacobs Lake). None of these places seem to have particularly appealing accommodation

It's about 120 miles from Springdale to the North Rim so yes it would be doable as a day trip. I am sure you are aware that The North Rim is closed until around mid-late May.

In season it can take as much as 3 hours to drive from Springdale to

GCNR, so better start early and the drive from Springdale to Mnt Carmel Jct. is very scenic and deserves more time to visit imo. Ample lodging in Mnt Carmel/Kanab.

Thanks a lot - Seems like it would be hard going to do in a day and give the Canyon the attention it deserves - any suggestions on Mount Carmel/Kanab accommodations?

Our "home base" in this area is Best Western Thunderbird Lodge, now upgraded to Best Western East Zion Thunderbird Lodge. It's in Mount Carmel Juncktion right at the corner of ut9 at the eastentrance to Zion and us89. Large rooms, patio, nice pool, 9 holes par 31 adjacent. The restaurant is not the best imo. Great location and very well located for Zion, Bryce, Pipe Springs NM, Coral Pink Sanddunes SP,Cedar Breaks and GCNR. For a town I would prefer Kanab, nice place although we never stayed in a hotel there. Always buy our jeans in Kanab when in the area.

We have stayed in Kanab several times at either Best WEstern Red Hills or Parry Lodge. We did later see the Best Western at Mt. Carmel and that is a good location for both parks. We really like Kanab. We are member of the Best Friends Animal Shelter there and visit there. Kanab has a nice homey feel to it with friendly people. It was nice after a day at the parks to come back there and go to the restaurants. There are a couple of very nice B&B's in Kanab that you might like. Violas Garden is just lovely. http://www.violas-garden.com/index.html

Fredonia and Jacobs Lake are very basic.
