Springdale is definitely better as a base for visiting Zion and Bryce. it is very small, though, which may be a plus or minus depending on your outlook. St. George has become a small city, though it's an unexceptional one, kind of a less affluent version of Palm Springs. Lots of sprawl. But a beautiful setting.

If you want to see Zion and Bryce, then definitely Springdale. It's right on the doorstep of Zion whereas St George is a fair distance away (especially to travel a few days).

Springdale is a bit quiet in the evenings but you'll find enough to do.
