Week trip in early June...

Looking for advice. My wife and I are planning a trip to Bryce and Zion for the first week of June 2014. This will be a week trip (Sat. to Sun.) and we will fly in and out of LAS.

We want to see the parks doing walking and light hiking (up to easy moderate). For accommodations we are looking for nice places (I know that is subjective) and might consider hiring a private guide for a few half-day hikes.

Any advice on the following would be helpful:

How should we divide the week between the between the parks (seven night in the area, last night we will stay at LAS airport).

Suggestions for hotels/motels/lodges?

Any particular areas or trails.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You really don't need a guide for hiking in either park. All the trails are well marked. And guiding inside the park (at Zion anyway) is limited to a few trails, which you can easily see on your own.

With the time you have, maybe do 2-3 nights Zion, 1-2 Bryce, then consider adding a night or two at the Grand Canyon North Rim,or Page/Lake Powell or head up Hwy 12 to Torrey/Capitol Reef National Park.

Hwy 12 is one of the most scenic drives in the country.

Zion, Bryce, Page and GCNR are all within 2-3+ hours of each other, so easy to see as a group.

GCNR only has one lodge so reservations book a year out.

Both Bryce and GCNR have astronomy/star parties later in June if that interests you. The programs are great.

Springdale near Zion has several great hotels. I prefer the Desert Pearl but there are others I've stayed at like Majestic View.

Near Bryce, the Best Western Grand is the nicest, newest.

The north rim has one lodge.

Also look at the top of the page under Top Questions, How to see the UT Parks, and Ohio Hicks sticky at the top of the forum about the Grand Circle. Tons of info about routes, sights and activities.

Great advice so far. Definitely look at at least one other activity aside from Zion and Bryce. Escalante/Torrey would be a great option. In Springdale, Desert Pearl is a great option. We also like Flanigans or Cliffrose. We like to base at Boulder Mountain Lodge with neighboring Hells' Backbone Grill when exploring Escalante region. No real hotel preference in Torrey, but make sure to dine at Cafe Diablo.

For hikes, Calf Creek Falls and/or Peekabo/Spooky slot canyon hike in Escalante area.

Have fun.

Springdale is a great little town immediately outside of Zion with some really good restaurants. It also has a shuttle bus that will take you right into the park, since there are certain areas of the park you won't be able to drive your car. Zion has an efficient shuttle system...we never waited more than 10 minutes for a shuttle. A very easy and short hike (I think 1 mile round trip) is just outside the east entrance before you enter the historic Zion-Mt. Carmel tunnel to Canyon Overlook. Parking area is on the right just before the tunnel and there may also be some just beyond that on the lefthand side. The Canyon Overlook trail takes you to an amazing vantage point looking over the canyon and you'll be able to see the winding switchbacks of the highway below and also some of the "windows" carved out of the tunnel. If you'd like to see pictures of that trail and detailed information on the hike, check out our blog:

So 3 days for Zions- Desert Pearl and Cliff Rose are top of the line places to stay. Or stay in the park and get the complete park feeling. Look at doing at least part way up the Narrows. Other hikes would be Emerald Pools., West Rim to Scout's Lookout, Kayenta, Observation Point, Watchman and Canyon Overlook.

2 for Bryce (which will give you plenty of time) You'd have time for Red Canyon hikes (Pink Ledges is good). Food in and around Bryce is not known for its quality. Don't expect much.

Gives you 2 more days.

Really there are so many options.

You could do Valley of Fire ( near LV) and Snow Canyon ( near St George)State Parks coming or going.

Include a drive past Cedar City and the Kolob Canyon section of Zions. Maybe Cedar Breaks as well.

You could take hwy 12 up to Torrey and back- gorgeous drive, great turnoffs for views, a couple nice hikes right off the road (Calf Creek and Petrified Forest), The Burr trail detour. You could also include a drive down to Devil's Garden on the Hole in the rock road. It is dirt, but maintained and normally fine in a 2wd drive car. Check at the visitors center in Escalante.

You could also chose to do the drive down to Willis Creek south of Cannonville. Also a dirt road, also usually passable in a sedan. You could also drive over to Grosvenor Arch in the same vicinity. A drive to the Cottonwood Wash Narrows could be included in that. All could be done as a day trip from Bryce.

Page OR Grand Canyon are good suggestions....

Or you could spend those extra days at Zions sitting on the porch at the lodge watching the deer and turkeys. Wandering the shops in Springdale, driving up to the Kolob Terraces and taking the North Peaks trail, renting bikes and biking the main canyon, do a canyoneering trip, visit Grafton and Silver Reef Ghost towns and hike at Red Cliffs preserve.
