Looking for suggestions on what to seee in a day at Shenendoah while staying in Harrisonburg overnight.
The SNP website, www.nps.gov/shen has a wealth of information on what to see and do in the park, including maps and brochures.
If I were doing a day in the park from Harrisonburg, I'd enter at the Swift Run Gap entrance and drive approx. 15 miles north to the Byrd Visitor Center. There's a nice museum there and you can get some good information from the rangers on hikes in the area. Then I would go up to the Big Meadow Lodge for lunch (an easy hike up from the Visitor's Center and you'll likely see some deer, chipmunks and other critters) . The food in the restaurant is tasty and many of the dishes include local Virginia products. The views from the huge picture windows in the dining room are excellent! (Before or after lunch, relax in the rocking chairs in the Great Room adjacent to the dining room and enjoy some more of those views.) After lunch, take a hike to walk off some of the meal you just ate. I enjoy the hike to the Rapidan Camp, President Hoover's rustic "Summer White House" and the parking area for this hike is a short distance south of Big Meadow.
Thanks for the imput. Will take your advice. Thanks
