Quaint Mountain Cabins

Wife and I are looking for a weekend getaway spot near the Shenandoah mountains. Ideally, we would like a cabin less than $100/night in mountain town or in mountains near a town. Any suggestions?

Have a look at the "places to stay" option on www.virginia.org It gives a list of cottages and cabins.

When will you be going? There are two lodges in Shenandoah National Park; Big Meadows Lodge and Skyland Lodge and both have cabins and motel style rooms. They both close in November (Big Meadows first and then Skyland). This past April we stayed in the Mountain View Cabin, at B.M., which has two fireplaces, and enjoyed it. Have not stayed in the cabins at Skyland, only the motel style rooms. You can go to the Shenandoah National Park website and get more information on how to reserve a room. Also, there are cabins (no motel style rooms or restaurant) at Lewis Mountain. You may also want to look at the towns of Front Royal, Luray, Strasburg, New Market, Woodstock for possible cabin accomodations.

There are very nice cabins in Lost River State Park in West Virginia. It is not that much further than Skyline Drive-you can get there in about 2-2.5 hours from D.C.

There are different grades of cabins rustic vs. "modern". There is a virtual tour on the website.

We liked the area so much, 10yrs. ago we bought property out there and have built our own!
