Itinerary help- Kings/Sequoia/Yosemite this week

We are arriving the May 31st. Could anyone possibly help me with a rough itinerary of the things that you would do if you were to take the trip? We enjoy hiking a lot, scenery, and wildlife viewing. We will want to be able to eat at a nice (not formal) restaurant in the evenings and enjoy a drink or two. Here are the days, places, and times we will be there. Any information would be helpful. We are both 30 years old and fairly fit and active.

Thurs 5/29 flight late stay in Fresno

Friday 5/30 arrive early at Kings/Sequoia park- all afternoon for activities- stay at Montecito Sequoia Lodge

Saturday 5/31 spend half a day in parks- drive to Cabin West Yosemite late afternoon and check in (late evening)

Sun- tues 3 full days in Yosemite

Leave in the morning wed- June 4th for Fresno to catch flight at 1:50

Questions:

Best hikes/sites in kings/sequoia- trails and food

Best hikes/sites in yosemite- trails, food, wildlife, etc

One to 1.5 days at the valley

half to one day at south part of park

One day at north part of park- will road be open?

How should we get from the condo in west Yosemite to the park best? Drive and park and catch shuttle or does shuttle come close to the condos?

Thanks,

Mandy

Based on my research I would hike the General Grant tree area in Grant Grove after entering the park at the Big Stump entrance, then continue towards your lodging. The rest of your time the first day and your second day I would hike around the General Sherman tree, Big Trees area near Lodgepole. The Peaks restaurant at Wuksachi Lodge looks decent.

Go to Nps.gov/seki and check the Spring 2014 Visitor Guide for more hiking/sightseeing and food ideas.

You'll need to drive from your Yosemite cabin - the free shuttle you're thinking of only loops around the east end of the valley. It doesn't go anywhere near Yosemite West. You can leave your car in Visitor Parking and shuttle/walk/bike from there.

Shuttle map here nps.gov/yose/…valleyshuttle.pdf and valley map here nps.gov/yose/…yosevalley-2011.pdf , to help you put it in perspective.

***You'll get great help if you post on the Yosemite forum as well - a lot of those posters won't see your question here on the SeKi forum.***

If I were there I'd hike Giant Forest from Crescent Meadow. You could just loop around Crescent and/ or Log Meadows; or for a longer hike you could take the Trail of the Sequioas all the way to the Congress Trail, then back along the rim of Kaweah Canyon, with Moro Rock on the wAy. You're in the forest for most of this without long views (except Moro Rock) with huge sequoia trees. Also one mile out on the High Sierra Trail brings you to Esgle View in a very different environment.

Crescent Meadow (probably need to take the shuttle from the History Center or Lodgepole or Sherman Tree areas) is a must-see. Try and do Moro Rock as well.

If you go to check in at Montecito-Sequoia first, it'll be 30-40 minutes back to the History Center or General Sherman tree.

The Lodgepole Visitor Center is a lot of fun, as is wading in Lodgepole Creek.

If you were to see Beetle Rock, quickly peruse the History Center, take the shuttle to Moro Rock and Crescent Meadow, do some walking at each of those two places (see Tharp's Log), then go to General Sherman tree, that'll fill up that first day and you'll be hightailing it back to your lodging for dinner.

Next day, on your way out, see Grant's Grove (and if you like to hike, do a hike that morning, Redwood Canyon is interesting and secluded).
