first come, first served - memorial day

we are planning our visit in Seqoia and Kings NP. Unfortunately we are to late to make a campground reservation for the memorial day weekend. Some Campgrounds (crystal springs, azalea, sunset) are "first come, first serve" campgrounds. Can anyone tell me, at what time they open? And at what time there is the best chance to get a spot on the campground?

If the campground is "open" that means 24 hours a day.

They won't be staffed 24 hours a day, that's for sure. I wouldn't recommend trying to drive around any of them in pitch darkness looking for a site - but people do it. The campsites have little clips where your receipt goes, so if the place has a receipt/piece of paper on it, it's booked whether or not there is anyone in it (there are usually instructions on how to find a site when you arrive before or after hours).

I think you'd find a spot at one of those places (there are other National Forest campgrounds too, like Princess, which are very nice). If you come through the Park entrance when it is staffed (from 8 a.m to 5 pm for sure), you can ask the ranger for advice about where to go.

People start arriving in good numbers by 7 a.m. (often having stayed in a lower elevation campground to be poised to come in to look for the weekend). The weekend really starts on Thursday night for long weekends - many, many people will come into the park on Thursday afternoon, so if you can get there early on Thursday morning, you'll be fine. If, however, you arrive late on Friday evening, be sure and have a map of the National Forest campgrounds - you might need it.

Dorst should have a ranger at the kiosk until at least 7 pm and they do hold some sites for first come/first serve (the last to go are the walk-in sites, which are not bad at all and require only a short walk). Stony Creek (upper and lower) near Dorst may have something too (although as Friday goes by, those two will definitely fill up).
