Time to Drive thru Sequoia

We'll be on our way to AZ, from Oregon, late next week & thought we would take a day to drive thru SNP, look at the big trees & whatever else struck our fancy. So how long will that take? Since it is getting colder we won't be doing extensive hikes, but want to see as much interesting stuff as time will allow.

We will be coming in from the north & going out via the south, probably plan on staying somewhere between Exeter & Bakersfield that nite.

Thanks for the help.

If you start from Fresno, go east on Highway 180 to the entrance of Kings Canyon National Park, take the Generals' Highway through the parks to Sequoia National Park, then exit Sequoia National Park on Highway 198 and go on to Visalia and then Bakersfield... your total drive time for that is about 4 hours of driving plus any time spent at stops along the way.

So if this drive is on November 2, the sun rises in Fresno at 7:42 a.m. and sets in Bakersfield at 6:01 p.m. That gives you about 10 hours of daylight that day. So you would have 4 hours of driving time plus 6 hours of time for stops. If you were starting from somewhere other than Fresno, that would mean you have a longer drive, of course.

If the weather is cold, you may want to be prepared for the possibility of Tule Fog, a ground-level fog that forms in the central valley, places like Fresno and Bakersfield, at night and in the mornings. If you encounter it that will slow down your drive in those areas. That fog does not go up into the mountains, it is a locally-formed fog. It could be foggy in Fresno but then clear and sunny up in the mountains, though cold.

You will have to watch the weather reports and check the park's web site for current conditions before driving up there. If a storm leaves snow or ice on the roads, the park may impose chain requirements on the tires. Call (559) 565-3341 and press 1, 1 and 1, and/or check this page, nps.gov/seki/…road-conditions.htm before driving up into the park.

No reason to worry about Tule fog next week. Looks like good warm weather next week.

The Central Valley only averages historically 1 day in October and 6 in November where visibility is under 1/4 mile (like coastal fog visibility levels). The thicker Tule fog when it forms occurs in late November thru late February.

I posted this chart on another thread which shows the number of days of 1/4 mile or less visibility averaged each month of the year at locations both on the coast and inland.

Pretty much the only places you would want to stay the night between Exeter and Bakersfield are Visalia or Tulare. Unless you plan to take Highway 65 through Exeter and Porterville, in which case you could stay in either of those towns. Of the four, I would pick Visalia along Highway 198, it has several nice hotels downtown (Comfort Suites and a Marriott) as well as others closer to highway 99, and also has a really nice downtown area with lots a local restaurants to choose from for dinner.

Sorry, but I only know Sequoia - and we always eat picnics and stay in the park. Maybe post on Fresno and Visalia forums?
