Best options for Olympic National Park in April?

Any advice for best places to visit in April - for 2 days in this area? We'd like some light hiking and scenic drives, but are worried about snow and rain this time of year...

- Quinault Rain Forest/Lake Quinault?

- Hoh Rain Forest?

- Sol Duc Hot Springs?

- La Push?

- Ruby Beach ?

Focus on the rain forest and coastal areas. You will have to deal with the rain. It's low elevation so snow is unlikely.

If you don't want rain then pray to then sun gods....

Skip Sol Duc Hot Springs. With so little time this would be my suggestion. Dan is right concentrate on the rainforest and the wild ocean beaches. Stay two nights at Lake Quinault. One of the most beautiful forests anywhere! A few options for places to stay. From there you are only a half hour drive from beautiful Ruby Beach. La Push and the Hoh will add more time, and with two days you have litle time. It is a huge Park and takes time. Do not try and do too much.

There is only 1 scenic drive, and I would call it more like a "scenic stretch of drive." This is the 20 to 25 minute stretch of Highway 101 as it runs along Lake Crescent, and it is truly lovely. The rest of the driving in and around ONP ranges from pleasant to dull to downright unattractive (only for short stretches, fortunately). Sol Duc Hot Springs is not for sightseeing; it's a commercial operation with hot water piped into concrete swimming pools, and I don't know if they are even open in April. However, Sol Duc Falls will be in spate right now, and it is beautiful.

Your listed destinations cover both the southern half of the park, which is where Lake Quinault is, and the northern, which is where Lake Crescent, Hurricane Ridge, Rialto Beach, and Sol Duc Falls are. The Hoh RF is in between. In general, the southern half is much rainier because it is well outside the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains. However, in April the northern half is likely to be wet, too.

Do some reading and research and decide which of these destinations you would like to visit. I will say that Hurricane Ridge will be under snow. On the other hand, if you rent snowshoes, which are available at Brown's Outdoors in Port Angeles, right at the base of Hurricane Ridge, you could enjoy the gorgeous, snowy scenery up there in relatively mild temperatures.

Thank you so much! Would you recommend Quinault Forest or Hoh Rainforest this time of year?

They are equally beautiful and equally wet. It's your choice.

They are essentially the same-- if you're staying at Quinault, then I'd just hike around there.

I don't think you're going to run into snow anywhere by the southern end, but there's a section that's closed off seasonally due to snow- it's on the north part.
