Hoh Rainforest in August

My boys, 8 and 3, and I will be visiting Forks first week of August. What are the best hikes in the area, maybe 1 - 2 hours each way? They are good little hikers and love the natural world. Are both the beaches and the rainforest trails accessible as daytrips from Forks? Are there crowds of people we should be aware of in these areas at this time of year? Very excited to see this region and share it with my sons.

Many Thanks in Advance,

Lance

Yes, the map makes it look as if 101 goes right by it. That's the problem with ONP. Everything looks so accessible. The truth is that 101 goes right by the entrance to the Sol Duc Valley. Then you drive 25 minutes through the valley along the Sol Duc River, past Sol Duc Hot Springs Resort to the trail head for Sol Duc Falls. It's a nice drive with interpretative kiosks along the river that describe the life cycle of the salmon, so it is well worth doing, but that's why it takes longer to get to the trail head than you would expect. The hike to the falls is just under a mile, and it's lovely. There are old growth trees and tiny wildflowers that grow in the shade beneath the trees.

A similar problem confronts map readers who plan to visit the Hoh Rain Forest. You think its 60 miles west of Port Angeles, only to find that you have to drive a very slow, dark and twisty 16 miles from the entry station to the visitor center and trails.

Two questions:

If we want to visit the Hoh rainforest, where is the best place to stay (not camping this time)?

Coming from the south, from Olympia, are there places to stop and hike, look, wander around, see weird and bizarre stuff, etc? When we take a 3 and a half hour car trip, we make it into a 6-8 hour one with stops if there are good things to see along the way.

TIA

Pala, have you been drinking? Look at Lance's preceding post. He wrote, "On a map, it looks like 101 goes right by it and lake crescent." I was responding to that.
