At Colter Bay right now after spending the night in a cabin here. Wanted to give a quick update on Day 2 yesterday before leaving for Oxbow Bend for sunrise.
Yesterday could not have been more beautiful here at GTNP. The skies were crystal clear, temperatures crisp in the morning and warm in the afternoon, and the Tetons glistened the whole time. I got some great photos and video all around but especially at Moulton Barn, where a group was doing a shoot for a jeans advertisement. The pretty young blonde model was unexpected bonus scenery ... :-)
Left the barn to head down Mormon Row, and a lone wolf walked in front of my car about 20 yards away and scurried into the field, where I watched him through my binoculars. Amazing.
Later did the Phelps Lake hike from the Rockefeller preserve with another couple I met from NC. Very pretty, and we saw a mule deer right off the trail frantically digging for roots.
Later, while heading to Jackson for groceries, I noticed a large plume of smoke shooting up in the sky and learned later while having a beer at Dornan's that it was pretty major and authorities were monitoring it for possible evacuations for folks living out that way (southeast of the park). As time went on the smoke spread into the patrk and you coud smell it strongly heading down Gros Ventre Road toward Kelly.
Keeping an eye on this today. Last night the smoke almost reached the Tetons but not quite, and did create a spectacular sunset. Just something to watch, though, for visitors coming this way today or tomorrow.
Well, off I go. Will check back when I can - thanks for the kind words on my last report.
