Airport and route suggestions to get to the South Rim

We'll be staying at the Yavapai Lodge in October, and this will be my first trip to the area. My question is about transportation. Which airport is closest to the that area? We'll rent a car at the airport, but wonder about time and route to get to the south rim area. Any suggestions welcomed!

You can either fly into Las Vegas which is approx 4-1/2 hour drive or Phoenix which is approx 4 hour drive.

Where will you be heading after you leave Grand Canyon? This might make a difference as to what airport you fly into!

Tell us what else and where else you plan to be on this trip. That will help us to help you.

If you're shopping for flights, compare LV and PHX but be sure to search car rental costs and fees too, so you can get an accurate comparison.

U.S. Airways has 5 round-trip flights a day into Flagstaff (Pulliam) Airport from Phoenix. There are 5 car rental companies at the airport.

Pricey but another option.

It takes longer to get to FLG because of the transfers in PHX. Easier (and less costly) to simply get off the plane at PHX and get in a car and drive.

I just said it was an option. I didn't say it was a CHEAP option.

Time wise, it is about even if you catch the right flights but by driving you get to see the scenery.

Just pray that someone doesn't jack knife a semi truck between Cordes Junction and New River because if they do, you are in for a long wait. There isn't any way to get around it.

Of course, if you are brave, there is Bloody Basin Rd., Badger Springs Rd., Bumble Bee Rd. (Hwy 59), and Maggie Mine Rd. Have done them all in a 2-wheel drive pick-up truck but not recommended for tourists.

Stay off those roads mentioned in post number 7. Those are a recipe for a vacation disaster
