Multi day trip Los Angeles Las Vegas Grand Canyon area

Ok have spent three nights reading and think we have come to some basic conclusions on what we want to do but would like some advice please. We are from New Zealand so very wary of driving on the opposite side of the road to what we are used to. We are getting off a cruise in Los Angeles on the 16th April 2014 after having done the Panama Canal. Los Angeles and theme parks do not appeal (we are in our 40s and enjoy a mixture of city and rural travel but big cities get the better of us after a couple of days )so we have 7 or 8 days before we need to fly home and think we would possibly like to spend a couple of days in Las Vegas and a couple of days in the Grand Canyon and a couple around the Bryce Canyon and Zion National parks. From what I can tell we would be better off hiring a car and doing a self drive tour rather than an organised bus/van tour. Is this an achievable plan or are we looking at spending to much time trying to get from a to b. Any suggestions on suggested travel routes and where to stay would be much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Do you want to make a loop Los Angeles-Los Angeles in 8 days? Fly home from LA? Or can you manage to make a one way trip like Los Angeles-Phoenix and fly from Phx. No drop off charges for the rental when rented from NZ between Ca, Nv and Az. 8 Days won't be long for a trip like that though. Here's an idea:

1. Los Angeles-Las vegas

2. Las Vegas

3. Las Vegas-Zion

4: Zion

5. Zion-Bryce

6. Bryce-Page (Antelope Canyons, Lake Powell, Horseshoo bend, Glen Canyon Dam)

7. Page-Grand Canyon NP south rim

8. Grand Canyon-Sedona-Phoenix.

GC to Los Angeles will be a much longer drive. App 9 hours with some reststops.R66 is on this route but no time to explore. Phoenix just is a 4 hours drive from GC plus the time for Sedona.

One night at the rim of the GC often is enough. You already will be driving more or less along the rim between Page and GCF VIllage with many viewpoints on the way.

If you can talke longer for this route you easily also could stay some days in Sedona and even visit Monument Valley but 8 days will be too tight for this imo.

It's very easy to this trip yourselves with a rental car. Avoid driving between LA and LV on a friday afternoon. Also lodging LV in the weekend is much more expensive. (Fri-Sat). Make your reservations for the NPs.

You are correct that the driving option is superior to any tour that you can book. If you have 8 days/nights, I'd fly from LA to LV and drive the loop from LV. Based on your preference for rural verses city environments, I'd minimize time in LV too.

Use the plan that Tet posted as a basic guide. You could reverse the direction if you choose, and it might be determined by availability of lodging at the parks. Check GCNP first, as it tends to book up as much as a year in advance. Page, Bryce and Zion also fill up in the umber months. Sedona has many more accommodations available just because there are more, but your options will become limited as you get closer to your travel dates.

Thanks Redrox yes glad you talked about flying as I should have asked that in my post. We had looked at both options and could not work out if it was worth the drive from LA to LV so think we will look at flying to LV on the day we get off the cruise ship spend say two nights in Las Vagas then hit the road out to the three National Parks using Tets suggestions as a starting point. That way we can make it a round trip and fly out of LV when we head home

Two nights in LV is probably one more than you need.

April is Easter time 2014 that's why it will be even more busy. Plus Springs break (Schoolies)
