Want suggestions

Spending 3 days in GCSR starting on July 4th...first question is where do we see fireworks? and if you have other suggestions with things to do without strenuous hiking trips, I would like to hear them, i.e. horse back riding, calm river tours and the like..

Thank you

To answer your first question, i doubt you will find any fireworks displays near the GCNP, too much of a wildfire danger, especially in the heat of the summer. The town of Flagstaff (to the south) tries to have a display each year, the fire marshal gives the thumbs up or down at the last minute depending on fire conditions, it is that precarious. Just do a google search of AZ Wildfires and you will see why fireworks and our forests just do not mix.

There is lots to do without strenuous hiking at the park...the Rim Trail is level and well surfaced and will lead you between viewpoints, take the free shuttle out to Hermits Rest (far west end) and stroll back or take the shuttle at your convenience. Ranger talks and walks are every day, the newsletter they give you upon entry will have a full schedule of things to do and see. The IMAX movie in Tusayan is quite good as well...and the air conditioning is wonderful :o). When you are out at the east viewpoints continue on the road to Cameron Trading Post for some Navajo tacos and shopping on the reservation. The star of the show is the Canyon herself, personally i am content with just finding all sorts of places and times of day to view it...

You won't find horseback riding or calm river tours inside the park at Grand Canyon.

There are two different mule tours/trips inside the park but one of them (the overnight at Phantom Ranch) books up to a year in advance! The other ride goes along a forested path above the rim and really doesn't go near the rim but for just one view point! Save your $$$ on this one!!

The Smooth Water Float trip out of Page, AZ is a great trip, but will require you to at least spend a night here!! There is also other things to do there as well....Horseshoe Bend, Antelope Canyon and Glen Canyon Dam as well as Lake Powell!

www.nps.gov/grca is a great site to go into for loads of info on the park!

Read the Top Questions on the right side of this page. Most visitors can't imagine what the Grand Canyon will be like. Suffice to say that horseback riding and smooth water rafting don't happen at the GCNP. Those activities are far away. The best smooth water trip is at Page. www.raftthecanyon.com

You will probably find that three nights is too long at the GCNP, but that could free up a night or two for Page and rafting. Sedona is another popular destination nearby, deserving of several nights for sightseeing and more of the activities that you have in mind.

What about a flightseeing tour for 45 -50 minutes from the south rim. Have a look at Papillon Air. We did one memorable flight some years ago. The windows are huge, the wings are set above the windows with only one set of struts to slightly obstruct the view. I still remember the views.
