How easy/hard is it to travel to and from Tusayan?

We plan on travelling from Sedona in the morning entering the park from the East Rim Entrance. Driving to the welcome center and doing some hiking around the South Rim from there. We want to see sunset and then also the dark sky to hope to see some stars. Is it possible to leave midday to checkin/rest/eat back to a hotel in Tusayan, then head back into the park for sunset and stay a bit late before heading back to the hotel? Is night time as beautiful as people claims to be?

You can stay in Tusayan just be careful driving back in the middle of the night as there may be Elk in the road. It is better and easier to stay in a park lodge. To see the night sky Yavapai Lodge is closer to the preferred location to see the night sky at the Mather Point overlook or parking lot.

Is the night sky beautiful? You be the judge. Here is what the Milky Way looks like from the Mather Point Overlook:

What are the dates of your travel as a night sky planning guide can be provided.

Thanks for posting in the forum.

Hat you propose is possible and easy to do. Just be aware that re entering the park for the sunset hour will mean that you’ll encounter maximum traffic at the gates and as you proceed to attempt to find a place to park your car again. Driving back to Tusayan in the darkness, you should expect to see elk on the road. Be very careful. They’ll suddenly appear as if from nowhere. Be careful not to overdrive your head light vision range.

Where will you be going after you leave the Grand Canyon? It is possible to enter the park thru the South Gates of the park right through Tusayan which you then might be possible to check it. Depending on where you are heading afterwards you can then exit the park through the East gates.

If your room is a cancelable room at Tusayan I would look for in-park lodging. www.grandcanyonlodges.com for 5 of the 6 lodges and www.visitgrandcanyon.com/yavapai-lodge for the 6th! This way there is no problem staying in the park past dark to view the night skies!

It gets dark early by end September.

We found the IMAX Grand Canyon movie worthwhile seeing for one night. This is in Tusayan.

In the park, there is sometimes night programs - check the park brochure or ask a ranger.

There is some small gift shops open, but not much going on at night other than dining.

Sorry you cancelled your room - we found Tusayan a good location to stay in late September due to it getting dark earlier. So do plan on some fine dining, etc. in the park while there to make the most of your time there.

They did well to book t room at Yavapai for their stay in September. They will be able to walk to the rim path (1/4 mile at most) to see the canyon in all kinds of light, and to view the night sky. No worries about finding parking (park once at Yavapai and leave the car) or about long lines at the entrance gate. Make reservations for dining after 7:30 pm when it is dark. Then go out and enjoy the night sky. Note that the moon will be nearly full at this time (full on Sept. 24).

Carry flashlights for walking as it does get very dark, even with a full moon.
