Thanks for posting. 2018 is going to be a busy construction year. I'm hopeful that Bright Angel won't actually close until the renovations at El Tovar are completed. Still, it's a necessary evil. These lodges are heavily used all year round and it stands to reason that extensive renovations are required occasionally to maintain an expected standard.Edited: 2:43 am, September 20, 2017
We'll likely push our trip into early November. My previous visits were during the last week of October, and I love cold weather, so I've no complaints.
Slate, seems like you can't catch a break with your lodging! ;) Still, if you're here in November and stay at El Tovar, at least you'll enjoy the newly renovated areas!
I made a reservation on Sept. 1 for a Bright Angel Cabin from Sept. 29-Oct. 1, 2018. I am guessing my reservation is still good?
Jazzkat, I would call to be sure.
Hummingbird sez: "Slate, seems like you can't catch a break with your lodging!"
I know, right? Xanterra is testing my Zen, but I refuse to crack.
If it were just me, I'd happily stay at any of the lodges. But my brother and his wife are visiting the Canyon for the first time, and I'd love for them to have a "classic" National Park experience.
Trust us, a classic Grand Canyon National Park experience doesn't matter where you sleep. Fret less about the hotel. Focus more on what you'll be doing during your waking hours.
Thanks very much, RedRox. Although twenty-five years since my last trip to the Canyon, this will be my fifth visit. I've always come alone, never stayed less than a week, and agree with your point about lodging.
Her stamina is limited, and so far, she seems most interested in the rocking chairs on the porch of the El Tovar. I'll get them out as much as I can.
I'll probably have sunrises to myself, and plan to take advantage of it.
"I'll get them out as much as I can."
To be filed under: "Terrible sentences, 101". ("Them" refers to my brother and sister-in-law—not the rocking chairs!)
I called this morning, and the reservation agent did not even know that Bright Angel was closing for a period of time for renovations. She looked it up for me and indicated that it is a roof replacement. My reservation for Sept. 29-Oct. 1 is still good, as Sept. 30 is the last day for a reservation before the project, and the last guests will check out on the 1st.
