3 days in Grand Canyon, some tips

My boyfriend and I are planing a road trip in september in the US.

We will be visiting the grand canyon 16, 17 and 18 september and we're breaking our heads to fill up our 3 days so that we can see as much as we can, but without rushing through it.

To give you an idea: we're staying at Mather Campground and we have a car.

We will leave early from Las Vegas the 16th. And the 18th we will go back in the evening to Las Vegas.

We booked a 90 min. heli flight the 18th at 9 a.m.

We would like to catch some beautiful sunsets/sunrises and like to do the South Kaibab trail to Skeleton point.

Any tips are welcome to help build up our itinerary.

Thanks in advance.

You will be visiting near the new moon date (September 19), so if you have clear sky look for the Milky Way in the evening sky to the South Southwest beginning at ~ 7:40 pm.

Good job on getting your reservations in place! Always a plus!

Once you get to the Grand Canyon...thinking around lunch time if you leave Vegas by 7:00....see if you can find a parking spot by Bright Angel Lodge or area and walk to the rim and stretch your legs a bit and get your first view of the Canyon! Maybe have lunch outside by the rim! Just watch those pesky squirrels and please don't feed them!

You then have time to do whatever you would like...take the free shuttle bus out towards Hermits Rest. There are view points all along this route that the shuttles stop at. There is also a paved walking path that goes along here as well....think it's approx 8 miles to the Hermits Rest area! You also have the option of getting on and/or off the shuttles at each view point!

After you can go check into your camping spot and get things set up! Wonder back to either have an early dinner or catch a sunset! Don't get caught up in finding the "best" spot for this....it's all along the rim. Try to arrive about an hour before sunset and enjoy!

The next day I would get up early and try to be on the South Kaibab for sunrise! Beautiful place to be for it! You will have to take a free shuttle to the trail head as you cannot drive your own vehicle here! Make your way to the new Visitor's Center and catch the orange shuttle line. Next stop is South Kaibab trail head. There is no water on this trail at all so bring at least 2-3 liters with you! There is a spigot at the area where the shuttle bus drops you off along with restroom facilities! Bring a headlamp as well! The trail is steep, wide and very easy to follow. Plenty of switchbacks along with erosion steps! Skeleton Point is about 3 miles down so allow almost twice as long to come back up the trail!

Once you come up you should have some time to either explore the East Rim Drive out towards Desert View/Watchtower. This road is about 25 miles and again view points all along. You can drive your car here!

There is also Kolb Brothers studio, El Tovar hotel, Tusayan ruins and museum as well as the Visitor's Center to explore!

You may want to rethink you departure time back to Vegas. You don't want to be on these roads during the dusk to night time frame. There are an abundance of free roaming large wildlife in the area and you don't want to run into one!!

Enjoy your trip!
