Itinerary Feedback

Hi, we're in the early stages of planning our itinerary and would like some feedback on our plan.

Questions:

Is this a good driving plan given our itinerary? Flights booked, hotels are mostly booked but can be changed (availability is somewhat limited at this point.)

Would north to Waterton be preferable to Two Medicine/other?

Recommended hikes? (We have a 5-6 mile cap on hiking)

Is there something quick we could do on 8/17 on arrival so its not a wasted travel day only?

8/17, (Arrive Kalispell 3:26PM) Coram VRBO, Travel Day (Apgar/W. Glacier/Lake McDonald)

8/18, Coram VRBO, Trail of the Cedars(Apgar/W. Glacier/Lake McDonald)

8/19, Rising Sun Motor Inn, Bird Woman Falls/Weeping Wall/Jackson Glacier Overlook

8/20, Rising Sun Motor Inn, Logan Pass &Gunsight Pass Trail

8/21, Many Glacier Hotel, Two Medicine Valley

8/22, Need <$100 hotel option near Kalispell to sleep, Explore Many Glacier (Drive back to Kalispell late)

8/23 (Depart 10:35 AM), Travel Day

Thanks in advance!

Depending on the time it takes to get out of the airport and get your rental car you could probably walk Trail of Cedars on the day of arrival. The next day (8/18)you could then drive to Logan Pass and hike some of Highline or to Hidden lake Overlook. Bird Woman Falls/Jackson Glacier Overlook(8/19) are just stops along the road and won't take the whole day to see. I would try to include St. Mary/Virginia Falls trail on that day. I also wouldn't use my day at Many Glacier to travel to Two Medicine. There is plenty to do in Many Glacier, boat ride and numerous trails of varying length and difficulty. I would try Grinnell Glacier for as far as you feel like and enjoy the views. Also back Swiftcurrent trail for a few miles. Swiftcurrent trail is fairly level walking till it starts toward the pass.

Agree with above...

You only have one trail mentioned (Gunsight Pass Trail) and that is one that you wouldn't want to do (it is 6 miles one-way to Gunsight Lake and isn't very scenic)...

8/18 Hike Avalanche Lake along with Trail of the Cedars (still under 6 miles)...

8/19 - Hike Hidden Lake...

8/20 - Hike St. Mary/Virginia Falls...

8/21 - Spend the whole day in Many Glacier (hike part of Grinnell Glacier trail...

8/22 - Hike Swiftcurrent Trail in Many Glacier in the morning then head back West...

8/21 or 8/22 - Another suggesetion would be to hike to Redrock Falls a 4 mile r/t hike that starts from the Swfitcurrent Motor Inn parking lot. If you hike it early in the morning, take the short side trail to Fishercap Lake, a few hundred yards off the trail, where you'll have a great opportunity to see moose.

Agree with Todd. Skip Gunsight Lake trail. That trail is through the woods with no view and goes through portions that have head high brush and vegetation. Once you get to the lake, the real scenery begins. But that is well past your 5-6 mile limit.

two med is 1.5 hour drive from Many Glacier. I would only visit there if you decide to not take GTSR back over the pass and use Hwy 2 instead to get back to Kalispell.

Thanks everyone, that was enormously helpful and we'll adjust accordingly! Now just need to find cheap hotel around the airport.
