Short stop in GNP in mid-June...

Our family will be staying near GNP during Father's Day week-end in 2013. Any recommendations on the must-see/do's in or around GNP during that time? From my research on the forums, I've read that many feel that June may not be the best time to visit. However, that is the only time we are able to make the trip and we would like to make the best of it. We do realize that GTSR will not (likely) be open, but any other suggestions would be much appreciated. The fact that we don't have much time there is also a factor, but we are headed to Banff for a week and are breaking up the drive w/the stop in GNP.

Will you be near the park's east or west side, and how much time will you spend visiting the park?

If you are hikers, trails that should be open are Avalanche Lake on West side and St Mary Virginia Falls on East side. must sees- the historic lodges at Lake McDonald, Many Glacier and East Glacier. Also take a boat tour on any of the lakes. Apgar a fun village with a few shops and visited center. Park Cafe at St Mary a good place to stop for lunch or dinner and make sure you order home made pie with hand rolled crusts for desert.

Weather might not be so great but don't let that deter you . GNP is so worth it.

Two other must sees. Sun Point on St Mary Lake and Pitimakin Falls at Two Medicine.

A great option, should you be interested, is to rent bikes in west glacier and ride going to the sun road for as far as you can. Better option for a week day than weekend due to traffic, but the road will be less hectic as the pass won't be open.

Otherwise the east side has better scenery and potential for animals.

We will be staying at a lodge near Hungry Horse, so the park's west side. We'll only have two days for GNP...too little time, I know. Thanks for your advice!
