Travel from Missoula airport

We are flying from Denver to GNP in late August. It is about $1000 cheaper for the 2 of us to fly into Missoula than Kalispell, but we are arriving about 8:30 pm. How long would the drive take from Missoula to GNP at night? Would road construction be a problem then? We have reservations at a B&B near GNP but I guess an alternative would be to spend the 1st night somewhere along the way. Thoughts?

The drive is about three hours. I don't know about road construction, but if there is some going on, I would think at night they would not be working.

Deer and other animals are a bigger concern than construction. Keep your eyes open.

Thanks for the input. I think it makes sense to stay in Missoula the first night & drive the next am - looks like it may be an interesting drive through the bison range and then Flathead Lake, which would be lost at night. Also, the road through the Indian reservation looks like it may be deserted at night - very few towns?

Actually, that route, Hwy 93, is the more populated route (instead of Hwy 83). There are several good things about taking Hwy 93:

The Indian Tribes fought for, and successfully won, the right to protect the wildlife by having the highway department install tall fences alongside the highway when they widened it. There are also huge culverts and even a wildlife bridge crossing overhead, quite interesting.

There is cell phone service the whole way, and there are many places to stop for any traveling needs.

The route is gorgeous! You are wise to do it in the daytime, when you are able to see the spectacular Mission Valley and Mission Mountains, not to mention Flathead Lake. My preference for beauty is to drive the eastshore of Flathead Lake, which is only 5 minutes longer than driving the westshore.

On your return to Missoula, you might want to consider taking the Swan Highway, Hwy. 83, but only if you are traveling in the daytime. In the evening it's too full of deer, and the dangers of hitting one, to enjoy the incredible scenery. Not nearly as populated, not good cell service, but very beautiful.

Safe travels!
