LOVETHEUSA,

You definitely want to go the Tioga road route. Very scenic. Once on the east side of the Sierras you will be travelling south on route 395. A possible stopover for you might be Lone Pine. There isn't much there, but there are 5 or 6 decent motels OK for a night's rest. Lone Pine is about halfway to LV.

You can stay in Death Valley, but it is still extrodinarily hot in Sept. If you stay in Lone Pine, you can still drive through DV to see the area on the way to LV.

The drive to LV from Yosemite Valley is more like 8 hours than 6.

You can stay overnight in Mammoth as well, but this is only 2 1/2 - 3 hours from YV, so it may not be far enough along for you. Mammoth is a nice ski resort area and would be a more interesting place to stay. As it would be out of season in September, rooms rates there would be very good.

That's great advice diegodreamer, really helped me out a lot. I think you are right, Death Valley will be too hot so we will have to do either lone pine or mammoth.

The route we took was out of Stovepipe Wells Village on the 190 until it meets the 374 to Beatty. At Beatty join the 95 to Las Vegas. We made Stovepipe Wells to the airport in 2hrs 15mins, but it was very early morning with a clear road and no speed traps!
