We're doing a northwest road trip to San Diego from the Chgo area in mid-Sept going thru S. Dakota, Montana, Wyoming and Idaho and will be entering Oregon via 84. According to the map, it looks like 20 to Bend, then south on 97 to 138 to get to Crater Lake which is in southern Oregon. But we don't want to leave Oregon without seeing what everyone raves about--the unspoiled and spectacular Oregon coast, so I figure we have to head north and west in order to see more of the coastline than what's just due west and south of Crater Lake. Do we take 97 north to 58 and pick up 126 to the coast? We've wanted to do this scenic route for years and twice before had to re-route because we ran into snowstorms in Sept, so we know that's a possibility. We're going to turn off the road whenever we see something that looks interesting between home and San Diego and our itinerary is whenever we get there.
Is this route to the coast do-able or are there alternatives? What should we stop at along the way?
