Help for a trip around crater lake on December 29th, 2016

Hi

I try to make plans for Christmas and visiting south Oregon state.

I plan to come from Gold beach for going to crater lake.

How are the roads for going to the destination? I read the south entrance is open Hwy 62. Could we do a tour?

i have seen a good hotel in Klamath falls, do you think it is possible to go to crater lake from there? (snow)?

Klamath to Rocky point (140 hwy) to hwy 62.... go thru Crater lake and go back by Grants pass for sleeping. Is it realistic? possible?

after that go to Portland the next day....

Do you think I can book hotels or I might change the trip?

Since you're new on TripAdvisor you are apparently shooting your same basic questions over several postings. You've been given the websites for current weather and road conditions and forecasts. Only the south entrance to Crater Lake is open and in bad weather chains could be required. All secondary roads in the mountains should be avoided in winter.

And my advice to anyone nervous about driving in the mountains in winter is...don't! Don't make the mistake of thinking your big SUV can handle ice and deep snow if you aren't skilled in such driving conditions.

I doesn't sound as though you are an experienced winter driver. Do not underestimate the effect of winter in this area.

Crater Lake gets an average of 44 feet of snow a year. Don't assume that your 4x4 will get you over a mountain road in the snow.

I don't believe any services such as tours are open at the lake in winter.

Crater Lake National Park had these 2 notices today, December 15th: 1.) North Entrance and Rim Drive are Closed for the Winter

The North Entrance road and the Rim Drive around Crater Lake are now closed for the winter. Highway 62 and the road to Rim Village remain open. Scenic views of the lake can be obtained at Rim Village if weather permits.

2.)The road from Steel Visitor Center to Rim Village is Temporarily CLOSED due to the recent snow storm. The only way to see the lake is by snowshoeing or skiing up the Raven Trail.

I suggest regularly checking their website for current conditions.

Currently it is snowing there and there are 68 inches of snow on the ground.
