Where to stay Portland to Crater Lake trip

We are planning on driving from Portland down to Crater Lake to spend a few days before heading back north to Cannon Beach. We are looking for suggestions on what route to take and and interesting place to stay near Crater Lake. We are traveling with our 3 children.

Not too clear posting. Do you want to stay someplace between Portland and Crater Lake and then continue on to Crater Lake, or do you want to stay someplace other than Crater Lake, but close, or what? Thanks. Chuck...

From Portland down to Crater Lake, there are two routes that are both really nice. One is to head east out of Portland on I-84 and then at Hood River take hwy 35 til it meets up with hwy 26 and take that down to hwy 97 on down to Bend and then Crater Lake. The other is the head south out of Portland on I-5 down to Salem, then cut over on hwy 22 to hwy 20 to Sisters then hwy 97 down to Bend and Crater Lake. Both are really pretty routes.

As for where to stay around Crater Lake, since you will have kids with you take a look at Sunriver Resort. It is south of Bend, and about 90 minutes from Crater Lake. It is a great family resort and has so many things to do right there and in the nearby area.

I'd go I-5 thru Eugene to HWY 58 which connects to 97 then off to Crater Lake. There aren't too many lodgings around that area. There are a few places in Chemult, OR and another option is the Lodge at Diamond Lake (30 min to Crater Lake) If you don't mind RUSTIC there is the Union Creek Resort. There are a couple of options in Prospect also. Camping on the other hand, there are a bunch of nice CG's along the route. I don't believe any of them have showers though.

If you go this route be sure to check out the day use areas along the route, like Natural Bridge. The river goes into a "cave" and reemerges further down the trail. You can literally check out all of the pull offs in a couple of hours. Worth stopping. They are right after Union Creek and continue along the HWY going to the Crater Lake turnoff.

Of corse, you can try for a room at the Crater Lake Lodge if it might be available.

As far as going back up to Cannon Beach, you could make a loop out of it and leave Crater Lake area heading to Roseburg, or Cannyonville and over to the coast thru the foothills, which will put you back onto HWY 101 around Coos Bay, or Reedsport which is approx. 3 hours or so south of Cannon Beach.

Not sure what you mean by a "few days".

It is one full day PDX to Crater Lk, One full day Crater Lk to Cannon Beach. Not sure if it is worth trip in two days. But in 5 or 6 days well worth trip.

Day 1 I would head out the Col R Gorge,

Day 2 and maybe 3 to Bend

Day 4 to Crater Lake, maybe overnight at Roseburg

Day 5 and maybe 6 to Reedsport on coast and on to Cannon beach. Maybe over night Newport

.

Hwy 138 is a pleasant route with lots of waterfalls on or not far from the road. Diamond Lake (not far from the Crater Lake entrance) is worth checking out. Renting bikes or a boat is great fun.

Hwy 58 is a nice route too, a stop at Waldo Lake is worthwhile. Both routes also have rustic hot springs in the vicinity.

Leave yourself a couple hours to explore Crater Lake, fyi its a couple hours to drive around the rim, there are lots of pull outs for viewing, 4 hours with all the tourists up there right now, we were thru there july 5 and it was pretty busy.
