Half Day At Bryce

We are travelling to Zion/Bryce/and GC North Rim early October. Unfortunately, due to timing and other constraints we will arrive around 2pm at Bryce.

What do you recommend we do at Bryce in our short period 2pm - 8pm.

Thanks in advance.

Drive to Rainbow Point ad return, making stops on the way back. Be on the rim before sunset. If you'd prefer to hike down into the hoodoos, take the Navajo loop trail. Allow a little over an hour. Be back on the rim before sunset.

Good ideas from RedRox.

Question: Are you leaving BC at 8:00 PM and driving to the North Rim? If so, that will be a long drive after dark. The usual advice on this forum is to aviod driving after dark due to the chance for critter encounters on the road and the winding nature of the road in places. Just be careful.

Agreed. Really bad idea to drive Bryce to GCNP at night. 8PM is bedtime at Bryce. Stay the night and head for GC in the morning.

Thanks for the great input.

We will definitely try to hike down in canyon. How long should we budget for the stops on the way back from rainbow point? Is the "rim" a specific trail?

We were planning to drive to Jacob Lake (about an hour + from the GCNP).

Thanks again. You guys are terrific.

I'm in Bryce right now. The park literature says to allow 3-4 hours to drive out to Rainbow Point and then stop at all 14 points on the way back. Doing that tomorrow so I can't confirm.

The 'rim' is the top of the ridge that looks down into the amphitheatre that makes up the main segment of Bryce. There are four overlooks into the amphitheatre served by the park roads. there then is a trail called the rim trail that connects these overlooks. The suggestion above is to take one of the trails that go below the rim, either Queens Garden or Navajo loop trail. To properly see the features of Bryce, you should hike below the rim, at least for a little ways. The perspective is much different when you are in the hoodoos, rather than looking at them from above.

Everyone's description of Bryce is different, but from my perspective there is two main sections to Bryce, the main amphitheatre, and the scenic drive up to Rainbow point. The fourteen points that Keith is referring to above are included in the whole park. That being said, allow at least a couple of hours to drive up to Rainbow point, stopping at the pulloffs as time allows. Spend the rest of the time at the main amphitheatre, either sunrise or sunset point

Highlight of my time in Bryce was hiking down into the Amphitheater. The park guide mentions that the Queen's Garden/Navajo combo trail is the most popular and that's the one my friend and I took.

We parked by Sunset Point. Walked the rim trail to Sunrise point. Descended via the Queen's Garden Trail. Ascended back to Sunset Point on the Wall Street portion of the Navajo Loop Trail.

I would do it again in a heartbeat!
