Visit to blue mountain

Very interesting information given, thanks. We are coming over to Oz in December to Melbourne, and then flying up to Sydney on or about the 23rd January, we hope to visit the Blue Mountains but know nothing about them! sorry guys!, there will be 6 of us and we would like to spend a day or two visitng the Blue Mountains... upon researching the area seems massive... so what do we do? where do we go? Any information would be appreciated.

Marian

Hi Marian

You might find some tips/ideas to plan your BMs visit in this thread tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g1426078-i13268…

The official BMs tourism site also has lots of info: http://www.visitbluemountains.com.au/

In addition to Mia's great advice, there is a lot to do in the BMs and depending on your interests you can do as much or as little as you like from exploring beyond the BMs to the historic Little Hartley for example. Or going to the Jenolan Caves or the Blue Mountains Botanic Gardens at Mt Tomah.

With a car you'll have more flexibility to go further than Katoomba and Leura such as to Blackheath (Govett's Leap for example) and to Wentworth Falls - both of these villages and the sites nearby are only about a 10 min drive from Katoomba.

Further down the mountains is the village of Faulconbridge where you could visit Norman Lindsay's former home - he was an infamous artist in his day.

Another good thing to do if you have time and a car is to go into the National Park at Glenbrook in the Lower Mountains. It's about a 10 minute drive from the highway and costs $7 per car. It's possible to see kangaroos in the wild here sometimes, especially if you go in the late afternoon.

Do keep an eye on the weather forecasts nearer the time as January can be very hot in the mountains - with a consequent fire risk. Carry plenty of water if you go hiking.

One of my favourite hikes is the Giant's Staircase leading down into the Jamieson Valley - you walk in the cool valley floor and then come up via the Scenic Railway or cable-car

Oh, yes! I love those suggestions! The Giant Staircase down to the valley and across to the Scenic Railway for the trip back up, and Jenolan Caves are my top things to do. If you stay at Jenolan Caves, you can, if you are lucky, find a platypus in the lake in the morning.
