unawatuna, mirissa, galle

Hello there

We are a family of four ( 2 adults and 2 boys 7 and 4). We are planning a one week trip to Galle Sri lanka, the 1 st week of November. We just want a relax holiday ( enjoy a quiet and clean beach, eat good and cheap local food, and see some elephants and turtles for the kids). We want to use as less transportation as possible. Any recomnendations as to restaurants, tours, and activities for kids in that area?Thank you in advance.

Hi Chilel,

Galle itself is nice for half a day, would not deem it a suitable place for family overnight stays. That leaves Unuwatuna, Mirissa and maybe Hikkaduwa as good bases. See

tripadvisor.com/Travel-g293961-c122197/Sri-L…

for possible day trips. Elephants are quite far from this area, closest could be the Udu Walawe Elephant Transit home but would not recommend that as a sole sight to travel 2 x 4 hours. Would combine with an UW jeep safari but then you need an overnight stay nearby as the safaris are 6-9 AM and 3-6 PM, just as in most wildlife areas of India.

All the best,

November is in the 2nd inter monsoon season with quite unsettled weather.

You may experience 3 types of days:

- Fully clouded with the odd shower, light or heavy

- 3-4 hours sunshine after 8 am and clouds building up in the afternoon with hefty thundershowers late afternoon, evening and night

- sun-clouds-rain-sun again and so on with the sunny spells lasting at least an hour and minimum 4 hours per day.

Hi there,

Plus all above comments I heard the turtle season is almost over by November. If there are any other ways to enjoy turtle swim it will be great full if you can share with us Erik or Hans

You can swim with turtles in Hikkaduwa.

I would agree with ErikdR, Galle is only good for a half day/day and then only in the old Fort area. I would suggest using Mirissa as a good town for a relaxing family holiday on a beach.

Hello all. Thank you for all your helpful answers. Unfortunately due to conflicting schedules, Sri Lanka is a no go this November. However we will consider all your inputs the next time we plan a holiday there. Thank you
