We are planning to be on Cortes for the month of August. Have heard varied opinions about whether a car is essential. Car rentals in Campbell River are quite expensive. Any ideas?
Hitchhiking is very common on Cortes. The locals do it and they pull over often. It is very easy to get a lift hitching. I lived on the island for 3 years. It is very safe. I have seen kids as young as 9 hitching by themselves.
If you're flying solo or with a partner and not in a particular hurry, then a little walking with hitchhiking is a great way to get around the island. Plus you get to meet people. If you're not particularly mobile or have kids / stuff to with your, then renting a car might be the right solution.
Sandro, you dug up a thread from 2012!
Trip Advisor didn't do their job, as this should have been "closed" a long time ago!
Hooray for digging up old threads. :)

Not sure if the TA guidelines allow such a thing or not Max.
