Renting a car vs taking bus from Munich to Murnau (Garmisch)

Renting a car vs taking bus from Munich to Murnau (Garmisch)

We're heading from Munich to Murnau. We plan to use Murnau as a base for 3 days and visit the Neuschwanstein Castle, explore Garmisch Partenkirchen, Lake Eibsee, Eagle's Nest, etc.

We were thinking of renting a car from Munich for these 3 days. We'd drop it back to Munich and board a night bus to Berlin.

Is that a good idea? Please help.

advantage of a car is flexibility and independence, you do not have to stick to timetables and routes from public transport, stop where ever you want or take an alternative route

Disadvantage could be parking space sometimes on crowded places and it is more expensive

Train to München to Murnau is simple and fast. Car is flexible but added complications. This trip (just finishing tomorrow) we've stuck with excellent public transport. Several possible day tickets allow flexibility getting on/off transport without extra cost.

Why take a bus München to Berlin when train is fast and comfortable? (What am I missing here?)

There are hourly direct trains from Muncih to Murnau. 55 min. travel time.

You can use a Regio-Ticket Werdenfels. This day ticket covers the S-Bahn Munich and the regional trains to Murnau. EUR 22 for the 1st traveler, plus EUR 6 for co-travelers 2 to 5 each. 3 children 6-14y old are free with this ticket.

From your host in Murnau you'll get a guest card which does among other things also covers the RVO buses in the area. The bus lines listed on this page plus the bus lines on the linked map.

Eagle's Nest is at Berchtesgaden. Even by car a bit far for a day trip.

Thanks @landfall38! We prefer bus (from Munich to Berlin) because it's cheaper than train. Where do you get day travel passes?

If we don't end up renting car, then is it better to take train from Garmisch to Berlin?

You would buy a ticket from wherever you are last before leaving to Berlin. If you leave from Garmisch, then you buy a ticket Garmisch-Berlin. You will anyway have to change trains in Munich.

I don't know how much I would have to be paid to spend a night in a bus seat but it will be quite a handy sum. Do yourself a favour and get an ICE to Berlin - it is going to be 4 h and after that you can sleep in a proper bed.

Get the DB Navigator App for your smartphone. Seriously the best travel App for Germany. Will give almost all train and bus schedules, and even buying tickets.

Learn about the various day passes (such as the Werdenfels pass mentioned - - we used this 1x) ; these passess are cheaper when multiple people travel. Passes are only good on local/regional trains (which are all you need in most cases and some also good on local trams/busses). They do not require advance purchase (same price day of travel).

Book well ahead (eg >3 mos) for longer distance travel such as Munchen-Berlin to get good price ("sparpreis" or non-refundable "super sparpreis") For eg, checking today, I can get an ICE fast train on Dec 5 for <30 euros.
