Hiking in Pyrenees in October: time and place

Hello,

We have a chance to spend a vacation in the second half of Oct in Spain, and would like to go in for hiking as usual.

Is it very crazy considering the weather changes? I have seen that many parks in Pyrenees are good for visiting till October, but still, I'd like to ensure - we are summer-hike type of people, not the winter one.

The question also considers the places to visit. I have read too many info on the topic, so couldn't clear particular places out. I would appreciate some hints on day radial (we have a car) walks that would give us the feel of the mountains.

Thanks in advance,

Marina

You'll find that the weather has changed for the second half of October, snow in the higher elevations, but you should still be able to find some great trails to follow, using the area north of Jaca, or near Panticosa in the Tena Valley as a base. You might be interested in checking out the following website if you haven't already.

I keep recommending Ainsa as a good base for visits to the different valleys of Huesca (Aragon). It has the best connections, but it is not the most scenic place to stay.

The weather usually change in the middle of October, but the autumn tints can last until the end of October. There is not enough daylight hours for the most demanding walks, but there is plenty to choose from.

I recommend the walks in the valley of Faja routes in the Valley of Ordesa (weather permitting), the routes in the Valley of Pineta and the easiest routes in the Valley of Chistau this time of the year. Valley of Tella offers nice and rather easy routes as well.

You will find the route descriptions, maps, GPS waypoints, driving instructions and road maps in the Topwalks website http://www.topwalks.net/en/aragon.htm
