Eleven beaches in Lagoa classified as ‘excellent.’

The Portuguese Environment Agency has classified eleven beaches in Lagoa as ‘excellent.’

The Lagoa beaches meeting the stringent criteria for the classification of 'excellent' for bathing and tourism are Benagil, Caneiros, Carvalho, Carvoeiro, Ferragudo, Marinha, Pintadinho, Cova Redonda, Sra. da Rocha, Vale Centeanes and Vale do Olival.

There is still work to be done this year to keep Lagoa as a top tourism region as the same organisation wants to see a walkway built and a rail between the Algar Seco and the Forte de Nossa Senhora da Encarnação for the safety of the many walkers who roam the cliffs. Also signage along the coastal trail between Vale Centeanes and Marinha.

During 2013, the municipality of Lagoa wants to fix the ageing fishing infrastructure at the tourist beach of Benagil, an investment of more than €176,000 subsidised by the European Fisheries Fund.

This work will include improvements to the slipway, the construction of a walkway and the installation of a new winch.

This work will serve to separate the bathing area from the working areas of the small beach, with obvious gains in safety.
