What to do in a single day at Karon?

We are reaching Karon from Phi Phi Islands on the 15th of May, 2011. We wont reach our hotel at Karon before 12 pm I suppose, what all places can we visit in that half day (including evening) around Karon? What all are a must see in Phuket? We are leaving for KL the next morning.

4-5 hours is plenty of time for a driver to take you on a bit of a tour. Maybe go and see a couple of beach lookouts and then up to the Big Buddha. If you are interested you could take a half hour elephant ride at Kok Chang, or visit a big jewellery store. Finish up in Patong for a look at Otop markets and a walk down Bangla Rd. Then back to Karon.

Thanks so much mnemon!

I have heard of some twilight tour to James Bond Island, is it possible to do that in the evening? Or does James Bond Island need a complete day trip?

Sounds like you are talking about the John Gray Sea Canoe tour. I have not taken the tour, as I've done plenty of caving in my time, in and out of the water. But it gets good reviews.

It's not to James Bond island, but similar. From the website http://johngray-seacanoe.com/ :

1230-1300 Hotel Pick-up

1330 Arrive Ao Po and board our modern twin-engine escort boat

Thai-style light lunch, trip and Nature Game briefing.

1430 Arrive first island and explore 1-2 caves and hongs

1530 Return to the escort boat and move to the second island

1600 Explore two more caves and hongs

1800 Self-paddle, swimming and make your own Kratong while waiting for the sunset.

Thai seafood buffet dinner during Phang Nga Bay Sunset.

1900 Return to a previously visited Hong after dark and launch your own Kratong

2000 Depart for Ao Po. Thai Seafood buffet dinner.

Play Star Games on the Starlight deck.

2100 Arrive Ao Po and transfer to your mini-van.

2130-2200 Book NowDrop off at your hotel.

It also states that the departure time depends a little on the tides. As you will probably have to pre-book this tour due to its popularity, I don't think you will want to risk missing the boat. Of course, if you can organise storing your luggage or transport of it to your hotel, you could wait on the docks when you land back from Phi Phi and go straight on the tour.

The Elephants at Kok Chang are located just out of Kata. It's not really a 'trek'. It's a nice ride on the back of an elephant through the local jungle. If you take the hour ride you go to the top of the hill with a nice view. I enjoyed it immensely, but probably won't do it again. The way the elephants walk, so daintily, it's like riding on top of a giant pussycat.

You could learn to scuba dive and do a intro dive. Phuket Scuba Club has a shop RIGHT on the beach, south end of karon.

Hi - if you can organise the driver that's taking you to Karon to give you a bit of a tour on your way to Karon you could include things like Rang Hill Lookout, Kata Noi Lookout, Small View Restaurant, Big Buddah, Kata then to Karon. After checking into your hotel you could go to Patong for an afternoon shop/look/etc. 15th is a Sunday - you would need to check but I'm pretty sure the Weekend Markets in Phuket Town would be on, they are fantastic. You can catch a baht bus (30 baht) from Karon into Phuket Town but you'd need to organise a driver/taxi to bring you back.

If you choose to stay in Karon - Red Onion, Restaurant with no name (next to Bamboo Pharmacy), Karon Seafood & Ging are all fantastic eating places. Don't miss a feed of pancakes from the cart in the evening.

Plenty of massage places all open late, numerous people watching bars (Bar with No Name), Karon Markets, Karon Temple Markets (need to check what afternoons they are on - someone on TA will be able to confirm).

We are just starting to plan our third trip to Karon and can't wait. It's a lovely place. Enjoy

Thank You All for your valuable suggestions!

We would love to do the John Gray's Sea Canoe Starlight tour, but need to wait and see if rain plays the spoilsport, since May in Phuket recieves lot of rains!

In case the kayaking is ruled out, then we would try going around the city and explore the markets of Phuket!
