Tabin/Borneo rainforest lodge

Just researching a trip to Borneo, planning to go to Kitabatangan river (Myne Resort) but was told by a friend that Danum Valley is the place to see wildlife. Anyone been to both places? Also not sure if we do go to Danum which resort? Obviously this is the road less travelled as not too many questions on the forum!

Hi there

I went to the Danum Valley and the Kinabatangan river and loved them both. Your chances of seeing big animals in Kinabatangan are greater , but in the BRL you will see fabulous creatures , unique to Borneo. The trecks are not at all hard and it is definitely worth it to go to both,

Have a wonderful trip.

Danum Valley is primary rainforest - a good 2-2.5 hours drive from the nearest town of Lahad Datu. It is great for trekking through the rainforest with canopy walks. Great for overall wildlife viewing - we saw orang-utans, hornbills, lots of birds, red-leafed monkeys, macaques, samba deer, insects etc... It gives you a great rainforest experience.

Kinabatangan is more developed and wildlife viewing is mainly on boats. Treks tend to be limited and disappointing. Here you should see proboscis monkeys (which you don't see at Danum Valley) and there is a chance for seeing pygmy elephants (chance you may see these at Danum also but less likely) as well as macaques, civets, orang-utans etc.

Danum Valley (Borneo Rainforest Lodge) was for me a more magical experience but it can be trickier to see the wildlife. It is easier in Kinabatangan but because in essence this is a "corridor of wildlife" trapped in by the palm oil plantations. So better photos but more tourists and evidence of the palm oil companies and devastation.

If you can do both, do. Both worthwhile and both different.
