Spending money

We're staying at the Eden Beach Resort for our honeymoon for 1 week (arriving 4 weeks today) before moving onto the Maldives. We're B&B at the Eden but will probably upgrade to AI for a few days. How much spending money will we need for Sri Lanka? I'm thinking for tips, presents, meals out etc. How accepted are credit cards in Beruwela? We'll probably just use the card in the hotel so that should cover excursions. Also are there plenty of atms, particularly in the hotel? And is it better to get our currency out there or buy it in the UK before we go?

Hi there,

1) Don't buy LKR in UK. Not allowed to bring in more than a token of 5,000 into the country, and the rate abroad is horrible.

2) There are no ATMs close to the hotels; Beruwala town, about 3 km to the north, and Aluthgama town which for many hotels is even a bit closer by have ATMs.

3) Cc is only accepted in bigger Lankan touristy shops and the big towns, not really for normal things around Beruwala including tourist restaurants. (And even if accepted, never loose sight of it - scamming/cloning has become popular). So best is either to plan ATM usage (Arrivals at airport also has two) or to carefully dose exchanging cash or TC at banks. Hotel also does that but at a rate 10-15% worse than the banks.

4) Meals set you down around Rs 700-900 for lunch including local drinks and Rs 1200-1500 for ditto dinner. Tips and presents not that much, entrance fees to attractions however can be hefty and car hire for excursions is around Rs 6000-8000/day depending on the distance.

All the best,

ATMs in Aluthgama (Sampath Bank, Commercial Bank and Hatton National Bank - all accept foreign cards) are less than half the distance compared to Beruwala town from Eden Resort.
