Cinnamon Island on Koggala lake

Cinnamon Island on Koggala lake

If you are planning to do a boat trip on the Koggala lake be careful to not get ripped off. The Ayurvedic products sold in the spice garden are ridiculously high priced and the cinnamon sold on Cinnamon Island is a scam. The cinnamon rolls mould after a view days. If you open the package you can see that only the outside rolls are really cinnamon rolls. Inside is just wodden rubbish. The cinnamon powder contains only little cinnamon and more normal dust.

Better buy your spices and Ayurvedic products in a trustworthy shop.

' ... products sold in the spice garden are ridiculously high priced ...' this is true of all tourist traps and it's no different in similar establishments near Kandy (or anywhere else for that matter, such as the price of beer in tourist hotels, for example). If you want to find the true prices you have to buy where the locals buy, and it helps if you are local also, particularly in shops where prices are difficult to see ... but I'm guessing people realise this and factor it into their decision-making on holiday?

Absolute Touristenfalle! Auf keinen Fall mit dem Boot vom Spice Garden auf die Insel fahren, Fahrt geht ca. 3 Minuten, der Preis dorthin -18 Euro- steht in keinem Verhältniss!

Agree. The whole lake experience is a scam. The guys with the boats even tried to sell us a villa. Don't bother.

Thankfully we turned down a boat lake "safari" but did visit the spice garden at the insistence of our tuk tuk driver who had taken us to se the stick fishermen - which by the way is worth checking out but only go early morning or late afternoon. Anyhow on our way back they insisted we visit the lake and garden - whilst it was quite interesting, beware of buying anything - prices at the shop there are 2-3 times higher at least than elsewhere - our drivers were so insistent at us visiting it wouldn't surprise me if they got a cut or kick back. By all means have a little tour of the garden but avoid exiting via the gift shop!!
