Family of 4 going to stay at Gala, Norway in July 2013 for one week. Kids are 10 & 12. Suggestions for activities? Must do?
Hiking is the activity people traditionally come to the mountains to do in summer. There are plenty of hiking trails in the area. However, as Gålå is in the middle of a highly developed resort area with a lot of mountains roads, bicycle riding has become even more popular than hiking. There is a bicycle rental shop connected to the hotel. Here's a description of a bike trip: ut.no/tur/…BB
For both hiking and biking you need a good map. You may order it on-line here:
If you have a car there are many excursions and day trips possible. The kids might enjoy a visit to Hunderfossen, 1h+ by car from Gålå: http://www.hunderfossen.no/english/
Gålå is just east of Jotunheimen and other central mountains, Rondane mountains can also be nice day trip by car.
Gudbrandsdal has some interesting cultural heritage such as Ringebu stave church or Sør-Fron church
Terrific, thank you all for your suggestions!
we have just returned from Gala last week. A car is a must. National Tourist Routes http://www.nasjonaleturistveger.no/en and Rondane, Geirabger and Sognefjellet are recomended. Villages to visit are Lom, Roros and Lillehammer. Visit virtualtourist.com/travel/Europe/Norway/Oppl… is an other helpful site to explore your stay.
Thank you. Is there a place not too far to go white water rafting in the summer?
Thank you for your other suggestions!
