advise on currency?

Staying at Flamingo Beach Hotel ASC in a couple of weeks time.

Know the reviews are not good but got very cheap deal so going with a very open mind!

Have seen many posts saying pay bar bill in Euros - is this still the case?

Our friends stayed at Dolphin and said staff were happy to accept shillings (don't suppose they should have!) is it the same at the Flamingo?

Can I not take shillings and pay with these or will items be dearer.

You should change your £s into Kenyan shillings on arrival in Kenya (don't exchange in the U.K).

The going rate is £1 = 128 Ksh.

www.centralbank.go.ke/forex/default.aspx

You should take your debit card and withdraw money from an ATM machine if so required (but let your bank/building society know you are going to Kenya beforehand).

Trying to exchange £s into Kenyan shillings in the U.K or at any hotel/lodge in Kenya is asking to be ripped off.

Exchanging £s into Euros or American dollars is also pointless.

Have a nice trip!

Nic,

Totally agree with what you say but this question is actually about the peculiarities of ASC who apparently charge everything in Euros in their hotels

Perhaps they do it on purpose to gain extra from the commission and maybe confuse you in the process?

Is it possible to pay bar staff in sjillings as in the Dolphon hotel - unofficial as it may be!

Yes you can pay the bar staff in shillings at the Flamingo, we stayed there in October, its good that you have an open mind about your trip as you will need to be, we went with an open mind but it didn't help, fortunatly we were with friends and stayed out of the hotel as much as possible.

Hope you have a great time

You will get stuffed paying by card in the ASC hotels. Not only do they charge in Euro, then convert to Kenyan Schillings for your bill (at their own rate), then your credit card firm will convert to Sterling when they bill you. Take Euro cash and pay them that way. Just be careful about having cash lying about.

Bars or restaurants that do not collect money until after a drink or meal is served would have to accept any legal tender (i.e Kenyan shillings), though they would not be obliged to provide change – the bar or restaurant is not in debt, it has been given a gift.

The law is the same in Kenya as it is in the U.K.
