Calheta in January

Hi, we are thinking of going to Madeira this January for a week and are quite a tight budget. We are looking at the Calheta beach hotel as it seems to have everything we are looking for e.g. good reviews and a sea facing balcony at a reasonable price. However I'm a bit concerned that there may be little to do and am unsure if there are many restaurants there. Do you think this would be a good choice for us? We are looking for a quietish holiday but with a few restaurants for an evening meal. I do wonder if we would be better placed in Funchal but cannot find a similar hotel at the same kind of price (max £250 for both for the week). Can anyone help please? Or am I being unrealistic? One of the activities we want to do is the dolphin and whale watching trips - realise that whales will be few in the water at that time. Any advice much appreciated

No it includes breakfast. £166 for Mountian view room for 2 people including breakfast and £232 for seaview room and breakfast 2 people. Thats why I am so interested in this hotel - good reviews, good locations, sea view rooms and unbelievable prices. These prices are through Travel Republic

That's a decent price, but not particularly good given it is low season. If you were willing to book with a German tour operator you could get a seaview double room for 220 euros a week in January.

Calheta region, Calheta town is one of the oldest in Madeira. Its on the sunniest and hottest south west coast. Its greatest asset is nature. One of the main reasons a car is recommended is because this region has the most forest in Madeira including sections of the UNESCO protected Laurisilva forest. So, its perfect for both activity and non-activity holidays.

Calheta has several walks in Madeira’s Top Ten: Rabacal, 25 fontes and Risco Waterfalls, sections of the Levada Novam and the PR19 from Prazeres to Paul do Mar fishing village.

Other popular sports activities are little game and big game fishing from the Town marina. Also, there are dolphin and whale watch boats. Then there are jeep safaris, swimming, snorkelling, paragliding, mountain biking. Other unmissable things to do in Calheta region:

-Visit Madeira’s best surfspots in the fishing villages of Paul do Mar and Jardim do Mar where Surfing World Championships were held in 2001

-Visit Portugal’s highest lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo and enjoy the spectacular views from the cliffs and the bird life

-visit one of the last remaining Rum factories and museums ‘Engenhos’ near the Marina

-Prazeres Art Gallery and for kids the Quinta Pedagogica Cultural Centre with a small zoo, tea and cider houses and more..

and not forgetting Mudas International Arts Centre perched above the Marina area with permanent and temporary exhibitions and performances in the theatre including Jazz, Dance and Film Festivals throughout the year.

At the end of this month November is the annual Dance Music Festival ‘Madeira Dig’

Some of the best zones for eating places in Calheta region is the Marina area and Prazeres village.

Shopping includes a Pingo supermarket in the Marina zone open until 10pm most days.

Accommodation ranges from 4 star hotels to many vacation rentals which you can view on the Tripadviser network of course.

Many thanks for all replies and think we have settled on Funchal for January. Will hopefully come to Calheta later in the spring summer of the following year
