Where to stay/how to book Mabul or Kapalai (divers)

I'm looking for some advice on how to choose between the accommodation on Mabul and Kapalai, and on good dive operators to book through.

We aren't particularly experienced divers (only go to 18m). We're not too fussed about the facilities where we stay as long as it is clean and the food is edible! Having said that, we're not too bothered about budget either so happy to pay for somewhere nice if it's worth it.

Also, we really want to dive at Sipadan, so how long would we need to stay in the area to have a good chance of getting there? I think we have 5 nights max available.

Many thanks for your help!

Between Mabul & Kapaplai the former is bigger and thus has more accommodation options - they vary from homestays and backpackers to nice resorts. It also has a village on the island so there is a bit to see beyond the resorts.

Kapalai is small island, in fact, it's little more than a sand bank, so the resort is one of those get-away from it all places.

What they both have in common is access to some of the worlds best diving at Sipadan - as well as other types of diving around the two islands. Diving is usually handled by the resort you stay with, but you can book through a reputable local dive & tour operator in KK such as Downbelow.

Hi Nomad1976.

I have not stay in Kapalai Resort but i have dived & stayed with Sipadan Mabul Resort. I could not recommend them more! the divemaster & dive instructors are very professional, do not worry if you do not have much experience, they will know how to guide you.

The accomodation is great! Clean, nice buffet meals provided too.

For Sipadan Mabul Resort, you can contact the resort directly:

We booked in Semporna with Scuba Junkies didn't do the diving just the snorkelling but others did the diving. The accommodation on mabuil was being rebuilt because of a fire we had a choice of accommodation choosing the budget cant remember the name of the resort but his name was john. It was great own room with shower and toilet over the ocean. It cost 100rm for the boat transfers 80 for the accommodation per person per day including breakfast lunch and dinner (food was great and very fresh}10 landing fee We stayed 2 days and went to different areas I think the extra trips were 50rm including lunch. The jetty where scuba junkies are based had amazing coral and fish. Some of the divers chose to stay in semporna and travel out each day, most got a chance to go to Sipidan. Most of the dive masters were Australian, they were very professional. Recommend.

Thanks for the review on Scuba Junkies. I'm currently undecided over which operator to go with. Need to do more research, either SJ or Uncle Changs I'm thinking.

Hmmm. Just read about the fire at SJ. Guess that's now out of the running!

Scuba Junkie was still operating and when we where there the chalets where nearly rebuilt. One thing i can say is that all seem to be helping each other, putting up in different resorts which was great.

Thank you for the info :) I actually emailed them directly after originally reading about the fire and they told me they reopened in April but that there was still some building work going on. I've booked with them for June, lucky for me they still had 1 permit left for my dates.
