Railpass value

Need advise on railpasses and travel itinerary. We are a group of 4 arriving Tokyo 11Jan 2010 for 5 days. Going to Hakuba for 7day skiing from 15-22Jan. Return to Tokyo for 5 days before flying home on 27Jan. Would like to see Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miayama Island. As rail passes are 7/14 day passes, how can we best get value for these passes? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You need to plan your itinerary down to the day to evaluate whether a Pass is worth the money. Generally speaking, you should put the long distance rides within the 7-day or 14-day window.

For now, your itinerary doesn't make sense because you don't have enough time to see Kyoto, Hiroshima and Miyajima. Without these destinations, a pass isn't worth the money. Check the train times and note how long it takes to get to those places, then re-think how you can possibly see them. Use Hyperdia to help you plan.
