2 nights in Alpe di Siusi...where should we stay?

Dear all, our trip in northern Italy in late May would include Alpe di Siusi for 2 nights. We are coming from Bolzana and then heading back to Milan after Alpe di Siusi. Which town should we stay in terms of easy transport to and from Alpe di Siusi and for visiting this area also? Any suggestion of a good and reasonable hotel there? Many thanks. :)

Easy answer Ortisei.

The lifts from Ortisei go up to the Alpe di Siusi area

www.valgardena.it/de/liftanlagen/page65.html

From Bolzano you can get the 170 or 350 Bus to Ortisei

Use http://www.sii.bz.it/en and simply use the "From" Bolzano "To" Ortisei search or alternatively just click on "Timetables as PDF" and select the 170 or 350 from the list

Currently on winter timetables but these a valid thorugh until mid

June

Please Note that some timetables are also available in the local dialect of Ladin (Includes the 170 & 350)

For 170 select Ortisei - Bolzano

For 350 select Val Gardena

Hi,

I agree, for late May by public transportaion, Ortisei in the Val Gardena. the Mont Seuc (Seiser Alm) cable car, from Ortisei up to the gorgeous Seiser Alm/Alpe di Siusi, starts running on May 21.

Actually, any of the 3 towns/villages in the Val Gardena (Ortisei, St. Christina, Selva) makes a good place to stay. They are just 5 minutes from one another, with St. Christina being in the middle. Ortisei is the most "town like", as it has an old town pedestrian zone and plenty of hotels, restaurants, etc. We've only stayed in St. Christina at the Garni Ariston. It's located a very short walk (down the street) from the bus stop and small TI.

Thank you all for the info. So if we stay in Ortisei, it's still easy to get train/bus to Milan? Are they running frequently?

I gave you the link to the bus timetable for the 170 and 350 which will take you to/from Bolzano

http://www.sii.bz.it/en/siipdftimetables and scroll down to the 170 and 350 timetables to see when they run.

The 170 does not run that regular from Ortisei to Bolzano (at best once and hour - more services from Seis - Siusi). The 350 doesn't run that regular to Bolzano.

However the 350 (runs every 30mins or so) to Ponte Gardena/Waidbruck where you can pick up a train to Verona (change at Verona for Milan).

The 350 also runs from Val Gardena (should you choose to stay there)

Any rail service whether from Ponte Gardena or Bolzano you will need to change at Verona for Milan. You have plenty of options.

To make things simple just use http://www.sii.bz.it/en and use "FROM" as the village you wish to stay in e.g. Ortisei and "TO" as Verona (as you have to change in Verona for Milan anyway).

It will show you the exact bus and train connection/services you need to get

www.trenitalia.com for trains in general

Thanks giftzwerg for your helpful info. Actually as we are visiting in May which means we are not there for skiing, we just want to do a bit of light hiking there. I have checked there are only a few hotels which operates in May in either Ortisei/St Christina/Selva and that many chairlifts in the region are not in operation also. I wonder if it's better for us to stay in Siusi for easy hiking in Alpe di Siusi? What's your opinion?

Hi,

I can't imagine the small village of Siusi would be a better choice than the Val Gardena, Ortisei in particular. There are many B&B's, Pensions, etc. that are open this time of year. Even if there are only a couple of cable cars open in the Val Gardena, how many trips can you take during a 2 night stay? Just the Mont Seuc (Seiser Alm) cable car (opens May 21) would provide you with an all day trip in the Alpe di Siusi. By the way, the small village of Siusi is not "in" the Alpe di Siusi. There is no town/village in the Alpe di Siusi. It's practically "traffic/car free".
