Trains in and around Plattling

My family will be staying in Plattling for 20 days for a kayaking competition. We thought that we would travel around by train to and from the Munich airport and to sight see in nearby towns. Should we buy a rail pass? Or do you think we need a rental car to get around? Do we need a train reservation from Munich airport to plattling?

Thank you so much for your response!

As Plattling is a rail knot you have quite some options by train.

Regensburg, Passau, Landshut, Bavarian Forest

No. But the Bayern Ticket is a good deal. A day ticket covering all regional trains in Bavaria (see map). Plus nearly all other local public transport as well (U-Bahn, trams, city buses, regional buses). Bayern Ticket is valid

Mo-Fr: from 9am till 3am next day

Sa,Su: from midnight till 3am next day

Bayern Ticket Single (1 person) EUR 21

Bayern Ticket (2-5 persons) EUR 29

The ticket is always available and can be bought on spot from ticket machines. For EUR 2 more also at the counters.

> Do we need a train reservation from Munich airport to plattling?

No. As there are only regional trains on this route this is not even possible.

DB timetable

Start: MUC

Destination: Plattling

and select as means of transport "only local transport" to be on the safe side when using a Bayern Ticket (albeit the selection is not necessary for this trip).

Bayern Ticket covers the buses from the airport to Freising and the trains from there to Plattling.

There is also the BayerwaldTicket - I think it is still 7 Euros per adult(overnight guests in our village get it free!) which covers the whole Bavarian Forest. To get there from Plattling, just take the Waldbahn train - it goes as far as Bayerisch Eisenstein on the Czech border.

BayerwaldTicket still exists. But from Plattling you need the Bayerwald-Ticket-PLUS which is EUR 14,00 per person. One advantage is however that there is no past 9am restriction on weekdays like with the Bayern Ticket.

But not in Plattling. The "PLUS" part is not covered by the "GUTi" guest ticket.
