Caribbean Princess

10 year Cruise ship guests thinking of picking an island and staying put for the week. Love Orient Beach (non nudists - trust me you would want this) ... have had response from tourism for Orient Bay with many options and Caribbean Princess looks promising. Not looking to spend my week cooking but willing to make coffee and heat pop tarts ... want on the beach if at all possible.... any feedback welcomed

I have always liked Orient because their is a lot of daytime beach activity and things quiet down at night but you still have bars/restaurants open for dinner.

There are quite a few restaurants and bars in Orient Village. Safari Grill (French), Ti Chi (Asian), Le Piment (pizza, casual dining), Cote Plage (French),Little Italy (pasta) Across the street is Paris Texas, a Tex/Mex place w/bar, and Tap 5 for pizza and other light meals. Le Cadre serves mostly tapas. Additionally right outside Orient complex on the main road is Rancho Del Sol for dinner and drinks.

In the Orient complex is also Cafe Plantation, and L'Astroble at the Esmeralda resort. They are both very good and more upscale.

Several beach bars have parties at night during high season - Waikiki, Budha Bar at Bikini, Kontiki and Boo Boo Jams, Aloha for lunch. Pedros for BBQ and more..

.There is an ATM located at the gas station in Grand Case on the main road down the hill from the police station as you are coming into town from Marigot and there is also one on the main road to Anse Marcel. Restaurants like tips to be paid in cash even when a credit card is used. It is a good idea to have some USD or Euro handy.

Some nice hotels steps off the beach are:

L'Hoste

Alamanda

Caraibes Beach Hotel

Wow thanks ... now I have more things to check out ... St. Martin is looking better and better ... like I said we have cruised for 10 years and we love all the islands so it is hard to narrow it down to just one ... any other islands that you would suggest for a week stay?

AliceH -

We're pretty much back and forth between Sint Maarten and Aruba these days but in years past have visited Barbados and Bahamas. I would pick Aruba to investigate, very clean island, well organized, safe and has beautiful beaches, fine dining, casino action, etc., very much a desert but that is part of the draw and touring is a big part of a first time visitors - things to do list - but you can't beat the two St Martin's for fine & casual dining, truly duty free shopping, casino action, beaches and variety, what's lacking is organization, public transport that is effective so you need to rent a car but that adds to the charm and excitement/enjoyment, as long as you're up to it.

The link to Ed & Sandra's Orient panorama should cut down your work a bit as you can link with many places in the photo directly from the panorama.

We were in Aruba via cruise ship ... as with any island we have visited our first time there was just an over view so we never even went to the beach. Mainly walked around and ate at Iguana Joes and had a drink at Carlos & Charlies (not our age group). We are beach and catamaran people so can't really judge Aruba by what little we saw but it reminded me of Big city USA on the caribbean .. crowded and fast paced. Love the link and now I have an excuse for not getting anything done today

AliceH - Yes, Aruba does have big high rise hotels lined up one after another. They also have a low-rise hotel section, more laid back with easy access to the beach & pools.

RCI, the big timeshare exchange company has a retail rental site. It is good world wide, you may find something to your liking and if you belong to or know someone who belongs to AARP you can take advantage of an additional discount.

You are being so much help I'm not getting anything done but dreaming of the Caribbean. Everyone should be so lucky!!! Thanks ... checking everything out. We are leaning towards St. Martin because it offers everything we enjoy ... beach beach beach the best Caribbean water ... bars and even the casinos on the Dutch Side. I don't think we will be brave enough to rent a vehicle for our first stay so will have to rely on taxis. After reading about the muggings etc. on other islands not too sure we want to venture out of the area!!!

AliceH - We have been going since 1989, I understand your concerns and fears - these things are rare and often occur very late at night and in remote places.

Let the forum know if and when you are coming and where you would like to stay.

Enjoy

I figure these are isolated incidents blown out of proportion ... like all of the people that "go missing" or "fall off" of cruise ships ... use your brains and apply common sense is our motto.
