Self catering in the city centre - a good idea?

We've never been to Alicante before and, as ever with cities, my instinct is to stay a bit out of the centre so that we can get some sleep. But there are a couple of nice looking self catering places right in the centre of Alicante (indeed a nice looking one on here.) What would it be like - is the centre noisy all night? Any views on the closest area to stay to the centre but where it's relatively quiet?

Well eating out is only fantastic in Alicante, therefore self-catering is ideal.

The main activity seems to be around the promenade and marina, so if you select away from these, and the old town, I wouldn't imagine there would be a noise problem.

We stayed room only at the Melia and didn't witness any sleepless nights.
