Some info on Alicante please?

After our poor holiday to Malta we are thinking we might take a friend up on an offer of her apartment in Alicante. I have had a wee look on Google earth to see what's about and can't really see too much, except beach. Can anyone give me a bit of info about the place please? We are hoping to travel last week in August for 9 days, we have a little 6 year old and would be hiring a car.

We are also thinking about taking an overnight trip to perhaps Barcelona or Madrid.

Thanks in advance for any information offered :)

Some really useful info in that article arrozabanda, thank you. The cultural/historic side appeals to us as adults, but we have our little one with us too. He managed to wander round Valletta with us so he would most likely manage to suffer a wander in Alicante with us too lol!

Any waterparks or zoos nearby that you know of?

I think the nearest zoo would be Rio Safari Park near Elche which also has a small aqua park on site.

Benidorm has the most in terms of waterparks, zoos and themeparks:

Terra Natura zoo

Aqua Natura waterpark

Aqualandia waterpark

Terra Mitica theme park

Mundomar Park zoo

There is an aquarium in Santa Pola but don't know if it is good or not.

Alicante city is a working city that has a tourist infastructure but it is not a resort. The beach is very good and safe. The castle is impressive and the old town quaint, coming alive in the evening. The ruins of Lucentum are interesting. The beach at nearby San Juan is great.

The museums in Alicante are very good but perhaps not to a child, although they may like the Nativity Scene Museum in the old town.

Thank you happy tourist, I had another look on Google and saw that the kind of things that would interest the little one are more up the Benidorm way as you say. It's striking a happy balance of not too busy but not waterparks and zoos everyday.

It looks like we could keep him relatively entertained for some days, he does love the beach and would probably spend every day on it but us adults need a little bit more.

Again, many thanks for your help :)

We are in Alicante at the moment and love it. It is possible to stay in Alicante and take the local tram, which is very cheap, to all of the little resorts along the coast, and also to Benidorm; and from there as far as Denia. We like the fact that Alicante has lots to do at night, but a change of scene during the day is great.
